Miyajima, the name often given to the island of Itsukushima, is located in Hiroshima Bay.
The place is made up of a large red gate (torii) 16 m high and 60 tons, built more than 1,400 years ago and renovated several times.
The torii is located 160 m from Itsukushima shrine, a Shinto shrine built on stilts so that the sea passes underneath.
The site is classified as one of the 3 most beautiful views of Japan (Nihon Sankei), notably thanks to its famous torii and its Shinto shrine floating on the water.
The torii of Itsukushima Shrine was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
The sacred island is therefore a very popular place for tourists.
Miyajima is a sacred island of Shintoism, with its famous torii and Shinto shrine. The island has long followed the precepts of “kegare” (designates impurity, defilement). There are therefore no graves on the island.
You can also easily reach Mount Misen, peaking at 535 meters and revered by the Shinto religion for its enormous rocks.
